Lincoln was nominated for the Republican ticket, at the Party's national convention in Chicago in May 1860, in a specially constructed building known as the Wigwam. The Wigwam meant to be temporary, built mainly so the City of Chicago could attract that convention. Made entirely of wood, it could hold between ten and twelve thousand people, and was demolished a few years later.
