Doctors who traveled with the armies usually did not have the luxury of access to established hospitals. They routinely conducted surgical procedures in close proximity to the fighting. Many Civil War surgeons carried their own personal medical kits, frequently made by jewelers or specialists in the field. A typical surgical kit would have included scalpels, probes, clamps, and a bone-saw. Other more specialized tools could be added if the surgeon was specially trained.
