For centuries, the muzzle-loading rifle had been the king of the battlefield. Millions had been produced, in hundreds of variations. These weapons were used extensively throughout the Civil War, but the introduction of new repeat-fire rifles meant that by the end of the war the muzzle loader was becoming obsolete. The Civil War was the last major American conflict to employ the muzzle-loading rifle.
