Grant's First Autograph Grant’s first autograph

The practice of collecting autographs of influential people was common during the Civil War. In December 1861, a young man from Ohio asked for Grant’s autograph to add to his growing collection, and Grant responded. “Your letter of the 16th inst. asking for my signature to place among many others you are collecting is received. I am pleased to furnish it. Yours Truly, U.S. Grant.” This is the earliest surviving example of a Grant autograph for a collector.
