One of five copies of it in Mr. Lincoln’s hand, this speech helped redefine the war for that generation and for all generations to follow. He presented this copy to Edward Everett, the other speaker that day at Gettysburg, to be bound into a book about the day’s events and sold at a Sanitary Fair to raise funds for wounded soldiers.
