Helping to launch Lincoln into the national spotlight, the seven debates against Stephen A. Douglas in 1858 were compiled into a book that hit the market during Lincoln’s presidential campaign of 1860. This copy was signed by Lincoln and presented to R.M. Elder, an attorney in Springfield who had campaigned for him.
