In May of 1862, Lincoln created the Department of Agriculture and later reported in his message to Congress in December of 1862 that "the creation of this department was for the more immediate benefit of a large class of our most valuable citizens." This report would have provided detailed information regarding crop production, information on the import and export of agricultural products, and innovations in the world of agriculture. It was printed in January of 1863.
