“Allow me to tender to you, and all with you, the nation’s grateful thanks …” On April 2nd, 1865, after the Federal victory at Five Forks the previous day, the Confederate stronghold of Petersburg, Virginia, finally collapsed under the Union onslaught. Lincoln congratulated Ulysses S. Grant and informed the General that he would accept his invitation to visit him the next day.
