“... please put Bob in the way to find where John Reed … may be found.” In the summer of 1862, Robert Lincoln asked his father to locate a young man we assume was his friend from Cambridge, Massachusetts, who had enlisted in the 11th Massachusetts infantry. President Lincoln took one of Robert’s calling cards and asked Secretary of War Stanton to look into it. On the back, Stanton asked the Adjutant General to try to furnish the information.
