“If the people at Kansas …” In the race for a U.S. Senate seat in 1858, Abraham Lincoln challenged Senator Stephen A. Douglas to a series of public debates in towns throughout Illinois. These simple notes, rather than a full speech, were the only preparation he carried one day. Before a crowd of thousands of people, he used the notes to frame his 90-minute response to Douglas’s arguments.
